Introduction

The Croatian Sheepdog is a low to medium-sized breed wearing a long black coat with small patches of white. This breed is known for its high energy and alertness as well as for its tendency to be a perfect companion dog.

In addition, this breed has been called Canis Pastoralis Croaticus which is translated as ‘sheepdogs of Croatia’.

History

The Croatian Sheepdog or Hrvatski Ovcar originates in Croatia and has existed as a distinct breed since the 14th century. It is a very old herding dog breed. And is believed to be the descendants of the ancient dogs that early Croat people brought with them as they settled the regions of modern-day Croatia. Historical documents dating back 800 years ago suggest that the Croatian Sheepdog has maintained its original appearance and didn’t change for centuries.

Although several hundred years old this herding breed was only recognized as a purebred in 1969 by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

Personality

Intelligent, intelligent, alert and very active are the most famous traits of the Croatian Sheepdog. This dog breed is known to have extremely high levels of energy. In addition, they are considered to be among the healthiest dog breeds today. Overall, this very old dog breed possesses highly-developed herding instinct and impressive watchdog skills.

Croatian Sheepdogs has been bred for centuries as a herding dog by the Croat people.

Environment

The Croatian Sheepdog will be a good apartment pet only if sufficiently exercised. These are dogs that are weatherproof and can easily adapt to all kinds of conditions and temperatures. To sum up, even though they can adapt to apartment life, these dogs will be much happier leaving in the house with a big yard.

Grooming

Croatian Sheepdogs are very easy to groom. These dogs only require occasionally combing and brushing to maintain the health of their coat. That’s it! Can you believe it? However, these are dogs that shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Croatian Sheepdogs should be trained early. As a result, these dogs will become very responsive especially when it comes to obedience training. In other words, early age training and socialization will help your dog to become mentally healthy grown-up dogs.

Exercise

Even though they are calm in the house, Croatian Sheepdogs are naturally very energetic. So, they should be given lots and lots of exercise to stay physically fit and mentally sound. Therefore, taking these dogs out for walks every day is recommended.
