History

The Samoyed dog breed originated from the regions covering the Siberian Tundra. However, this breed’s exact date of origin is unclear and not properly documented in history. They were discovered by Western Polar explorers during the 19th century. These northern dogs were living among the nomadic Samoyed tribe who used them for various purposes such as hunting arctic animals, herding reindeer and also used as sledding dogs. Further, during the early 20th century, the Samoyed breed reached Great Britain where they became popular with the English aristocracy. In addition, this particular dog breed was often used for Arctic explorations and had become popular in the United States as companion pets.

Personality

This ancient dog breed craves human interaction and will display affection and gentle disposition towards their human family. Samoyed does not enjoy being left alone. Therefore, leaving them in a backyard would hurt their mental health. However, they are intelligent and naturally lively but can be mischievous at times. Samoyed may be a hunter but it will get along very well with children and other dogs.

Grooming

This dog has a straight outer coat and a soft but thick undercoat. Their coat can be white, but sometimes cream or biscuit-like. As they have such a rich coat, they are heavy shedders. Hip dysplasia is common to domesticated canines but Samoyed dogs can also suffer from this disease. In addition, these dogs are known to suffer from diabetes, skin allergies, and develop eye problems. Also, male Samoyed dogs are prone to PRA.

Exercise

The Samoyed is a breed that will require a big amount of activity to satisfy their exercise requirements. Therefore, taking them on walks or jogging every day can help maintain their health. In addition, the owner should cut down physical activities during warm weather as heat can build up under their wool-like undercoat.
