History

The modern Bosnian Rough Haired Hound dog breed originates in the area covering modern-day Bosnia sometime during the 1890s. This breed is considered to be the contemporary version of the ancient pre-Slavic dog breed known as the Illyrian Hound. Some believe that these dogs are the descendants of the earlier version of the modern and much smaller Istrian Short-haired Hound breed. But most recognize this breed as descendants of the indigenous dogs of their native country that were crossed with old types of Italian gun dogs. In

Bosnian Rough Haired Hounds are skilled hunters that will display liveliness and impressive courage while on the jog. These are large scent hounds that are hardy and will excel hunting all types of game in any kind of terrain. These dogs will be persistent and are known to be very alert. Their deep sounding bark makes them very good to have as watchdogs. The Bosnian Rough-Haired Hound is a well behaved and very gentle dog when at home and around their family.
