Introduction

The Rat Terrier comes in various sizes and standards will differ from one kennel club to another. The National Rat Terrier Association recognizes the Toy Rat Terrier. The United Kennel Club does not.

An American icon and former President Teddy Roosevelt named the Rat Terrier dog breed himself, favoring this particular breed as the ideal hunting companion. The Toy Rat Terrier is considered by some breeders and organization as the smallest of all the Rat Terrier variants. This variety is only recognized by the National Rat Terrier Association and their affiliated canine clubs and registries.

History

The Toy Rat Terrier, like its larger cousins, originated in the United States sometime during the 20th century. The smallest of the Rat Terrier family, these Toy terriers were also bred to be feisty ratters. More breeders prefer to breed this variety as companion pets rather than actual hunting dogs. Personality

Toy Rat Terriers are the small versions of the Standard Rat Terrier dog. They have similar traits and only differ in size. Like its larger cousins, the Toy Rat Terrier are intelligent dogs that will be very active and always curious. When out hunting, they will be impressive as these dogs are known for their amazing gameness and tenacity during the hunt. When at home, these dogs are affectionate and affable towards families. They are also known to be one of the friendliest terrier dog breeds, getting along with everyone including children, other dog breeds, cats and other pets as well as strangers.

Bred For

The Rat Terrier dog breed was developed to be used in hunting trips, companion dogs, family pets as well as tasks that are considered as terrier work.

Environment

Rat Terriers, in general, will do okay as apartment dogs provided their owners sufficiently satisfy their activity requirements. Toy Rat Terriers are suited for residential building living conditions.

Grooming

All the varieties of the Rat Terrier dog breed are very easy to groom and will require minimal attention in doing so.

Training

Toy Rat Terriers are also easy to train like the other Rat Terrier varieties. This is because of their innate intelligence, quick learning capabilities and eagerness to please their masters.

Health

The Toy Rat Terrier dog breed is known to be at high risk of developing hip and elbow dysplasia and luxating patellas. These dogs are also at high risk of acquiring mange and allergies. They are dogs that are common to have under or overbites.

Exercise

Toy Rat Terriers are not as demanding as their larger cousins when it comes to their exercise needs. These dogs should be taken on walks every day and should be given ample playtime to maintain their well-balanced disposition.
