History

The pioneer breeder of the Treeing Walker Coonhound is credited to Mr. Thomas Walker. This scent hound dog breed was named after him when he started the breed’s development during the middle part of the 17th century in Virginia, which back then was still a colony of Great Britain. Mr. Walker developed this treeing dog breed by crossing English Walker foxhounds with the foxhound variety that George Washing imported from England, which was called the Virginian hound. Today the Treeing Walker Coonhound is one of the most popular breeds being registered with the United Kennel Club.

Personality

The Treeing Walker Coonhounds are dogs with an intense drive to work. These dogs are known to be oozing with confidence, highly energetic and very outgoing. They are dogs that will display a gentle disposition and will get along with everyone.

Bred For

Treeing Walker Coonhounds were specifically bred to be both working and hunting dogs. Their innate docile disposition and intelligence make them excellent companion pets. Today, these dogs are also trained for coonhound field trials and displays impressive speed, scent-tracking and treeing skills.
