Introduction

The Standard Manchester Terrier dog breed is the original breed from which the Toy variety was down sized. They are considered to be the oldest known and still existing terrier dog breed today. These dogs are also considered very sleek and racy, topping all other terriers when it comes to these traits.

History

Initially developed in Manchester, England during the 1800s, the Standard Manchester Terriers are very efficient rat hunters. They gained popularity for decimating the rodent population as England went through their industrialization era. The pioneer breeder of the Standard Manchester Terrier breed is credited to a man named Mr. John Hulme. Mr. Hulme is a native of Manchester and created the dog breed to combine the quickness of racing dogs and the natural hunting instincts of the English Black and Tan dog breed. They were considered as a separate breed from the Toy variety only in the year 1959.

Personality

Among all the known and existing terrier dog breeds, the Standard Manchester Terriers are known to be sleek and racy! They are impressive in running agility courses making them very obedient and eager to perform. These terriers are known to have great hygiene as they keep themselves clean and tidy at all times. They are sensitive and often show shyness when it comes to strangers or new faces. When around their family, these are well-mannered dogs that will show devotion and affection.

Bred For

Standard Manchester Terriers were bred to be efficient rat hunters. Today they are bred mostly for agility competitions.

Environment

They are very adaptable to all types of living conditions and do well in the city, rural and suburban areas. They may not be perfect in apartment buildings for their tendency to bark a lot, but when cleanliness is concern these dogs can adapt to life in residential building complexes.

Grooming

The Standard Manchester terrier are dogs that require very little grooming attention.

Training

These dogs possess admirable intelligence and are very eager to learn new things. They are one of the most highly-trainable dogs known today.

Health

Unlike the Toy variety, Standard Manchester terriers are dogs that are more prone to have major eyesight problems especially when it comes to lens luxation. They show no minor medical problems though but are occasionally afflicted with epilepsy.

Exercise

The Manchester Terrier dog is a rat hunter at heart and a terrier by nature. They love high energy activities, open spaces and challenging courses. Taking them on daily walks will not be sufficient. Having them as jogging and running mates will be
ideal.
