History

There was a time that the Norfolk and Norwich Terriers were considered to be one and the same. They were recognized as a separate and distinct breed only in the year 1964. The two terrier breeds are very similar, differing only in the structure of their ears. Norfolk Terriers are those with dropped ears while the Norfolk is the type with pricked ears. Norfolk terriers originated in the 19th century in Great Britain. Pioneer breeders wanted a very small but still efficient working terrier
that can hunt and keep rats and foxes at bay.

Personality

The Norfolk Terrier is a dog breed that is known to be very affectionate and very friendly. These well-tempered dogs are loyal and highly trainable. They are also very fearless and every game when it comes to hunting. Proper socialization will make these dogs very behaved when around children and even cats! Norfolk Terriers should be supervised with small prey-like animals as they will treat them as prey even if they are properly trained and socialized.

Bred For

The small Norfolk terriers are dogs that were bred and used to be rat hunters. They are also used to bold foxes that have hidden underground.

Environment

Norfolk s are dogs that can be very good apartment pets provided that their owners sufficiently meet their exercise requirements.

Grooming

They are dogs that require moderate grooming attention. Brushing their coat three times a week, trimming their coats once a month and stripping them twice a year should be done.

Training

Norfolk terriers are small terriers but, surprisingly they are very easy to train and housebreak.

Health

The common health problems facing the Norfolk Terrier breed include cardiac problems, skin-related issues, and valve disease. There are some lines of this breed that are very prone to genetic eye disorders and back diseases.

Exercise

Norfolk Terriers may look like small dogs, but they are small dogs made to hard work! They just love working and these are very lively dogs that require a very active life! These dogs should be taken on long walks every day!
