Introduction

A terrier that is so loved it has caused controversy among breeders around the world. The United Kennel Club calls them Jack Russell Terrier while their American counterpart, the American Kennel Club calls the same breed, but longer-legged varieties as the Parson Russell Terrier. Whatever you wish to call them, these are terriers that have been popular for years for their admirable traits.

History

The Reverend John Russel lent his name to the world-famous Jack Russel Terrier. The reverend was the pioneer breeder of this terrier breed sometime between the mid to late 18th century. He created them to produce a hunting dog for working foxes in England’s Devonshire region. This dog breed has caused a stir and has been a subject of much debate among breeders. Currently, there are two breed clubs with different philosophies about the Jack Russel. The American Kennel Club calls them Parson Russel Terrier as well as its parent club the Parson Russell Terrier Association of America. They are favoring types of this terrier which are equipped with long legs. Opposed to that idea is the Jack Russel Terrier Club of America and the United Kennel Club.

Personality

They are known to be big dogs trapped in a small body! That’s how big the energy levels of the Jack Russel Terrier. Their famous traits include having a very strong work drive and equipped with a very high level of intelligence. They are also very loyal, keen, and assertive.

Bred For

Jack Russel Terrier was developed to be used as a small game hunting dog. Jack Russel dogs specialize in tracking and digging for foxes. They were also bred to hunt alongside taller and long-legged hounds. Today they are popular for their skills in hunting, tracking, agility and performing tricks.

Environment

The Jack Russell Terrier will do just fine in an apartment type of dwelling. But owners should make sure that they have their JRT’s sufficiently exercised. These terrier dogs will do best in rural homes that have at least an average-sized yard.

Grooming

All coat types are easy and do not require a lot of time for their grooming needs. Comb and brush their coats regularly to your JRT’s looking neat and well kept. These terriers should be bathed only when it is really necessary.

Training

The Jack Russel terriers have been used on TV and in the movies, proof of their highly trainable trait.

Health

Jack Russel Terriers are prone to dislocation of the kneecaps, inherited eye diseases, deafness and Legg Perthes and have a high risk of acquiring mast cell tumors.

Exercise

Jack Russell Terrier are dogs that demand to be taken on long daily exercise sessions. Taking them on brisk walks is recommended. Having these dogs play and run in spacious areas will make them ideal pet companions.
