Adopt a Doberman Pinscher, Dog Breed Guide

Introduction

For a dog breed coming from Germany, a country known for old purebreds and ancient dogs, the Doberman pinscher can be seen as relatively new. Even if they were first developed centuries ago, sometime during the middle eighteenth century. These large, squarely built, compact and muscular dogs are by-products of crossing shepherd dogs with short coatings that are indigenous to Germany.

The dog breed got its name from its pioneer dog breeder, Mr. Louis Dobermann a tax collector who initially developed the breed for sheer necessity. As a tax collector during the 18th century, perils of his profession include traveling to bandit–infested roads and highway robbery. He wanted a travel companion who can watch and guard him in all sorts of situations.

History

The Doberman Pinscher was developed in Germany in the late nineteenth century for use as a police, military and guard dog. It is believed to have been bred by Louis Dobermann through a cross of the now-extinct old German Shepherd, German Pinscher, Rottweiler, English Greyhound, Weimaraner and the black-and-tan Manchester Terrier among others.

Personality

The Doberman is loyal, active, and devoted to family. It makes an excellent watchdog, alert and fearless. It is intelligent and highly trainable and generally gets along well with children and other animals.

Bred For

Tracking, watchdog, guarding, police work, military work, search and rescue, therapy work, competitive obedience and Schutzhund.

Environment

Doberman Pinschers are ideally suited for homes with an average-sized yard. But these dogs will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised.

They are intelligent and very easy to train

Health

Cardiomyopathy, hypothyroidism, osteosarcoma, wobbler syndrome (cervical vertebral instability) and von Willebrand’s disease are the major health risks and issues to check on the Doberman dog breed.

Exercise

These dogs are very energetic and known worldwide for their great stamina. Daily, long walks or jogging sessions is a must for owners.
