A cute little dog that is compact enough to fit in your hand carry and covered with powder puff white fur! The Bichon Frise dog breed will quickly catch your heart for their sweetness and affection. They are just one of the most ideal companion dogs today. They have a natural instinct to love human companionship and gifted with lovable traits such as an independent spirit, intelligence, boldness and a lively outlook towards life.

History

Since the fourteenth century, the Bichon Frise pronounced BEE-sho Free-ZAY has been well documented by maritime historians as the dog which the French Sailors brought home from Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The dogs are not native to the Canary Islands but were brought by Italian traders who used these dogs for barter in exchange for other goods.

If you talk about their ancestral roots, like all Bichon breeds, they are descendants of the dogs developed in the Mediterranean region during the Middle Ages. French nobility got their hands on these fluffy looking dogs during the 1500s and became the dog to have during that era. By the 1800s, it has lost the favor of the French aristocrats and was often seen as common companion dogs that accompany organ-grinders or perform tricks in circuses.

Personality

These small and compact cuties are gentle, affectionate and playful dogs with a dashing and cheerful behavior. They are also surprisingly sturdy and hardy for a dog with a powder puff appearance.

Bred For

Used as watchdogs and to perform tricks, this breed is competitive and obedient.

Environment

The Bichon Frise can live in an apartment if it gets enough exercise. These dogs are okay living in homes without a yard.

Grooming

This breed should be groomed frequently and bathed every month. Professional grooming is recommended every 4 weeks. The Bichon sheds little to no hair and is good for allergy sufferers.

Training

Bichon may be difficult to housebreak for their competitive nature but they will show obedience if trained in a positive manner. But most are extremely bright and will be easy to train with patience, firm and positive training sessions.

Health

Some are prone to watery eyes, cataracts, skin and ear ailments, also epilepsy and dislocated kneecaps. They can be very sensitive to flea bites.

Exercise

The Bichon Frise dogs are very active by nature. Taking them on a walk every day is highly recommended. Having time to play with these dogs will help in taking care of their exercise requirements. If a pet Bichon Frise is not sufficiently exercised, they will develop behavioral problems. Having them well exercised keep these dogs stable and well balanced. A home with a large yard that is fenced will make these small dogs very happy!
