Introduction

The Boxer dog breed is yet another dog that has a turbulent past. Although created to be the perfect cattle herders and hunting dogs in Germany, they have a history of blood sports in them. These dogs were used in-pit fighting and bull baiting. They even got their name from it for their propensity to use their forelegs to punch their opponent. These dogs were also used as cart pullers, showing impressive strength.

History

Boxers have been found in Europe since the sixteenth century. Although they were originally hunting dogs, they are believed to be descendants of the Tibetan fighting dogs and cousins of the Bulldogs. They were used for fighting and bull-baiting until the practice was outlawed in Germany in the mid-nineteenth century. Boxers have also been used as police and military dogs, performance dogs, and all-purpose companions. A breed that was rarely known in the United States, up until World War II when U.S. servicemen became interested in the breed. The name Boxer stems from their tendency to use their forelegs when fighting.

Personality

The Boxer dog breed is a fun-loving and playful bunch that is extremely loyal and affectionate with family. Oftentimes, these dogs may be wary with strangers but are generally confident and make friends quite easily. The Boxer is excellent with children making them perfect home pets to have.

Bred For

They were bred for dogfighting, bull baiting, cart pulling, and as cattle dogs to round up livestock. They were also used to catch and pin medium to large-sized game. Today they are used as watchdogs and guardian dogs, with some seen in police and military trained K9 units.

Environment

If sufficiently exercised, these dogs will do quite fine in an apartment type of home. They are temperature sensitive though, too hot and too cold will not suit them.
