Introduction

The Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA recognizes two divisions of the Balinese cat breed. The CFA has official standers of the two varieties which are called the Balinese and the Javanese divisions. The Javanese Cat is basically a Balinese cat that is considered as non-pointed cats of this type. This cat breed variety is closely related to the Siamese cat, but with a medium-length and silk coat, plumed tail and available in all types of patterns and colors that are not included in the four traditional Siamese colors.

Under the CFA’s official standards, the Javanese cat is distinguishable from the Balinese variety in its coat length. Javanese cats have a shorter coat compared to the Balinese cat’s two inches long coat.

Origin

The Javanese Cat breed that is recognized by the Cat Fancier’s Association is a variety of the Balinese cat breed that originates from a genetic mutation of the Siamese cat. It shares the Balinese or Longhaired Siamese breed’s history up until the 1950s.

This oriental longhair cat breed originates in North America sometime during the 1950s. Ms. Helen Smith, one of the Balinese cat breed’s pioneer breeders is responsible for these cats’ Asian names. It has nothing to do with Indonesia’s Java region. The Javanese name was coined to continue the tradition of naming oriental cats from places within the South-East Asian region of Asia. This tradition started from the Siamese, which is basically the direct ancestor of the Balinese and Javanese cats.

History

The Javanese cat shares the same history of the Balinese cat breed which originates from the United States. It is one of two varieties that were developed at the same time after a serious and selective breeding program was initiated to separate the Balinese cat breed from the Siamese. This happened sometime during the 1950s and was led by New York cat breed Ms. Helen Smith who is also named this breed. The name was chosen to continue the Asian name legacy given on cats that are considered oriental-types, a tradition that started with the Siamese cat. The Javanese does not depict Java, Indonesia because it originated from that area and the breed is not related to other cat breeds that originate from this area of South-east Asia.

The Cat Fancier’s Association is the only known feline organization to recognize the Javanese as a strand or variety of the Balinese cat and groups it under the Balinese – Javanese division. Basically, Javanese cats are the colorpoint version of the Balinese, displaying rare colors and patterns that are not included in the traditional Siamese colors. The Javanese is also considered as a non-pointed Balinese cat.

Personality

Javanese cats are unlike other cat breeds as they are considered more sociable and crave human interaction. Actually, these cats just love and adore attention from their human owners as well as other pets within the family. They are very intelligent cats that are famous for being very playful and fondness of any activities shared with their human owners. These cats are considered somewhat needy as they get depressed if not given adequate attention or sufficient interaction time with their family. Standards

Appearance
The Javanese is basically a Balinese cat with shorter coat length, non-pointed in appearance and considered as a colorpoint cat. This is because they come in rare colors that are not included in the traditional four colors of the Siamese breed that is followed by the Balinese standard.

General
Javanese cats have svelte bodies that are light but strong, powerful and well-toned with muscles. This breed has longer coats than that Siamese but shorter than the Balinese. They have a distinguishable plumed tail and come in rare coat colors and patterns.

Body
Javanese have medium-sized bodies that are long, tubular in shape, but graceful in appearance. This cat’s svelte-type body is complimented with prominent bone structures of the shoulder and hip area. This cat has sleek bodies that extend gracefully to its long and slender neck area.

Head, Ears and Eyes
Cats categorized by the CFA under the Javanese division have medium-sized wedge-shaped heads or non-pointed and proportionate to the cat’s body size. The muzzles are fine and either wedge or apple-like in shape with a medium-sized chin and jaw section.

Javanese cats have very large pointed ears that are wide at the base area. These cats have medium-sized eyes that are almond-shaped. Their eyes are slanted towards their nasal region and should be proportion with the lines of their wedge or apple-shaped head and their ears. These cats have eyes that come in a deep and vivid shade of blue.

Coat and Tail
The Javanese cat is famous for its graceful plumed tail that is long and tapering to a very fine point. Cats classified by CFA under the Javanese division basically have the same coat texture and appearance of the Balinese but are relatively shorter.

Color
Cats under CFA’s Javanese division come in a variety of coat colors and patterns that are not included in the four traditional Siamese colors. They are colorpoint cats and show “rare” color and patterns which may include tabby and tortie patterns, red or white-colored coats.

Health

The Javanese cat is known to be more prone to genetic disorders than the Balinese. It is a cat breed that is commonly affected by hearing problems that leads to deafness, joint problems including hip displacement and arthritis as well as being cross-eyed.
