Introduction

The Toy Fox Terrier is the smaller version of the original and much larger Fox Terrier. Although they share similar physical traits and genes, except for the size, the Toy Fox Terrier is recognized as a separate breed.

In addition, these dogs have an amusing toy-dog personality and they are wearing a satin-haired coat. They were known as barnyard ratters but today they are perfect companion dogs.

History

During the early parts of the 1930s, breeders in the United States started crossing a variety of toy-dog breeds including the Manchester Terrier and the Chihuahua. Crossbreeding was also made using the Miniature Pinscher and the Italian Greyhound. Further, these dogs were then bred to various lines of the Smooth Fox Terrier. The result? The Toy Fox Terrier, a dog that has all the traits of the dogs mentioned but on a miniature scale.

Personality

The Toy Fox Terrier dog is a pet that will bring a lot of smiles and laughter into your home. They are passionate dogs that tend to be young spirited even when they reach maturity. Therefore, these puppy-like traits make them perfect companions. In addition, these dogs are known to be animated, bright, intelligent, insightful and affectionate. The Toy Fox Terrier dog breed is also known to be very active. They will show their quickness, alertness, and curiosity whether out on the hunt or just playing at home.

Grooming

The Toy Fox Terrier has short hair covering its body. This type of coat requires very little grooming attention. They are dogs that constant shedders. However, having them thoroughly brushed once a week will do the job.

Training

The Toy Fox Terrier is one of the most intelligent dogs in the terrier group. Therefore, training these small dogs will be easy. These small terriers will respond to calm and firm training.

However, early age socialization and training will make them healthy grown-up dogs.

Health

Toy Fox Terrier dogs are considered to be healthy dogs. There are lines of this breed that may be affected by medical conditions such as leg-calve-perthes. Also, the Toy Fox Terrier dogs may suffer from allergic reactions. It is rare but does occur. Allergic reactions may come from corn, wheat, and beet pulps.

Exercise

Toy Fox Terriers are like all other terrier dogs. Owners of these dogs should have them on a regular exercise and playtime schedule. Therefore, they will enjoy everyday walks or jog sessions.
