Known officially as the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog, these are truly big bulldogs at heart. Their appearance might be comical, a trademark look of the mastiff breeds which can be called bulldogs, but the Alapaha Bulldog are serious diligent guard dogs. The Alapaha Bulldog is always eager to work and always game to play.

History

 To adopt an Alapaha Bulldog is to adopt a dog that is naturally loyal and very protective. The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog can trace its origin as far back as the 18th century. This breed was developed in the mainland United States, with roots from the English Bulldog breeds from Britain and crossed with the American Bulldog. This breed was officially identified as a breed of bulldog during the 19th century in the State of Georgia where it earned the title of  “the plantation dog” for its excellent guarding traits of the vast plantation of the Peach State. But the Alapaha Bulldog was not recognized as a new breed until 1986. Today, several registries recognize the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog, except for The AKC.

Personality

The Alapaha Bulldog is a natural alpha dog. This breed needs their human owners to establish that they are the boss early or else the Alapaha will take over. Although they have tendencies to take over as the leader of the pack, they are also high trainable. These bulldogs are highly skilled guard dogs, so excellent that their instinct to protect their family can cause frustrations for their owners. They are also great with children, offering an admirable trait of loyalty and the need to protect.

An average-sized yard will make the Alapaha quite happy. Adaptable to apartment living conditions as long as exercise is regularly done.

Grooming

An average shedder who needs to bath twice a month. Very little grooming is needed with the Alapaha Blue Bulldog.

Training

Very trainable! This dog catches on quickly. Be sure to establish the alpha position for their tendency to take over the pack as well as their human owners.

Health

For having a small gene pool, the Alapaha Bulldog can develop entropion, a health condition where the eyelids are inverted and also prone to deafness. This is brought mainly from inbreeding.

Exercise

The Alapaha Bulldog demands regular exercise. They are naturally gifted and very athletic. Long daily walks should be done. Owners of Alapahas must be prepared to exercise them rigorously and, ideally, involve them in a sport such as weight pulling.
