Introduction

Adopting dogs that belong to the Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute breed is on the rise. But to adopt an Alaskan Husky, cousin to the first two breeds are not that often seen. This is sad because, among the three, the Alaskan Husky dog can be considered as the calmest. Calm and friendly towards their families, a bit too curious with strangers and considered as very gentle. This breed is not great in guarding, the Alaskan Husky barks rarely. But they are great as family pets, although having toddlers and pet cats isn’t exactly recommended.

History

The Alaskan Husky dog’s date of origin isn’t clear. But the breed was developed to be an alternative to the Siberian Huskies. They were bred to be larger and leaner than their Siberian cousins, a perfect choice for sled pulling competition and sled races. This breed is often mistaken with Siberians, but unlike its cousin who has those trademark blue eyes, the Alaskan Husky is gifted with those cute and curious brown eyes.

To adopt an Alaskan Husky is to adopt a dog with Siberian Husky, German Shepherd, Inuit Husky and Border Collie heritage. Originally bred as one of Alaska’s prime working dogs, today it has outranked the Siberian Husky on being the premiere sledding dog for the breed’s exceptional speed. Still not recognized for the AKC or CKC, the Alaskan Huskies are not considered pure breeds.

Personality

The Alaskan Husky dog breed was developed for endurance and for its working dog traits. But they are great with children and strangers as well. Their sociable, easy-going and docile nature doesn’t make them good watchdogs and seldom barks at all.

The Alaskan Husky dog breed requires a large yard with high fences. Be sure to have the fence wires buried as these dogs love to dig the ground. They can live in apartments as long as they are properly exercised and fully trained

Grooming

Minimal grooming is required except when times it sheds, which happens twice a year. The Alaskan Huskies are very heavy shedders.

Training

Being patient and consistent are the keys to make them suitable as house pets.

Health

Major health issues are seldom. But the Alaskan Husky dog breeds are prone to accidents for their love of roaming and digging. Having this dog on a leash is advisable and a yard that is suitably fenced.

Exercise

Lots of exercises is a must and must be done daily and regularly. Not providing the Alaskan Husky their sufficient exercising needs will often lead to health ailments and demeanor problems.
