Introduction

The dog world’s the jack of all trades, but sadly, master of none, the Alopekis Dog is known across the Mediterranean as “multum in parvo”, which roughly translated to “much in a little”. That is exactly what this breed of dog is, a small package stuffed full of dogginess.

Covered in short and smooth coating with a wedge-shaped head, sickle-tails and pricked ears, you will often catch the Alopekis giving you smart and inquisitive facial expression. They are Greek in origin and their name describes what they look like, small fox-like dogs that are swift and graceful. There are two types of coat varieties for this breed, short-haired and wire-haired. The latter variety is very rare and breeders of the Alopekis dreams of producing this type of coating.

History

Descendants to the primitive dogs that sprung out of Greece, the Alopekis can trace its roots as far back as the founding of the ancient Greek city of Thessaly. Ancient Greeks depicted this small and fox-like dog breed in poems and there are even ancient archaeological finds of sculptured of Alopekis-like dogs. In modern times, before the Alopekis development was regulated, people call this breed as Greek’s street dogs. The abundance of the Alopekis roaming all across Greece, from small sleepy towns to large villages as well as big metropolitan cities was the primary reason for this nickname. Now they are carefully bred and provisional standards are now followed.

Their original purpose has been lost in history, presently though; the Alopekis are versatile dogs who can adapt to any lifestyle and master. They are house pets, watchdogs, working dogs, rodent hunters, and poultry herders.

Personality

Like their “multum in parvo” reputation, the Alopekis can adapt to anything and anyone. They can be home pets or hardworking farm dogs. They can live in rural, urban and big city living conditions. The Alopekis will not fail their owners and will remain faithful and devoted no matter what. Armed with high intelligence and pleasant disposition, Alopekis is exactly what they call the dog in Greece, a jack of all traits.
