Introduction

Large, powerful, alert and equipped with the solid and heavy bone structure, the American Akita is a force to reckon with at first glance. They are truly massive but their bodies are well proportioned. The American Akita was originally developed to be a fighting dog, but today it is known as one of the best guards and watchdogs to have! It is important to know that there are two types of Akitas. The original Akita Inu or Japanese Akita and the American Akita will be tackled on this dog breed guide.

History

In Japan and many other countries around the world, The American Akita is considered as a separate breed from the original Akita Inu. But in the United States and Canada, the two are considered one and the same. The primary difference in this debate are the weights and sizes, also, the American Akita allows the black mask markings which are not a breed standard on the Japanese Akita breed.

The Japanese Akita can trace its roots during ancient times, whereas the American Akita started its development during the post World War II era. This is the time when American servicemen brought the first Akita dogs for breeding in the USA. During this time of divergence, traditional Japanese Akita breeders focused on staying true to the Akita Inu Standard that has earned its title as one of Japan’s Natural Monument. Whereas American Akita breeders aimed to have larger, heavier boned, more muscular and exceptionally more intimidating specimens.

Personality

The American Akita is intelligent, courageous and fearless the same as their Japanese Akita cousins. But the American breed tends to be more aggressive to other dogs and animals as some of the pioneer breeds developed this breed for dogfighting. But they are also known to be careful and exceptionally affectionate with their handlers and owners.

American Akitas are known to be spontaneous. Their owners should always remind them who the pack leader is with a confident and consistent approach.

Bred For

American Akitas were originally bred for guard and watchdog capabilities. They were also bred for dogfighting.

Environment

Apartment living conditions are okay with the American Akita as long as it is exercised sufficiently. They will be happier in homes with a large yard.

Grooming

The American Akita requires significant grooming attention. Firm bristles should be used when brushing. Bathing should be done only when necessary as it will remove their coat’s natural waterproofing. They shed seasonally, about twice a year and sheds heavily during its season.

Training

Training should start young. Trainers should be firm, confident and always on top of things.

Health

Unfortunately, the American Akita is prone to several health problems. This breed is prone to hip dysplasia, both hypothyroid and autoimmune thyroiditis, immune diseases, skin problems other joint problems specifically in the knee area.

Exercise

Regular exercise is a must but can come in moderation so they can stay in tip-top shape. Long daily walks are recommended.
