Introduction

The American Crested Sand Terriers are among the pure terrier’s dogs known in the dog breed world. American Crested Sand Terriers are known to be hypoallergenic! This hairless terrier breed got its name from its sandy colored skin. It comes in mostly soft beige or white skin color, both color variants come with pink noses.

History

Compared to other dog breeds, the American Crested San Terrier, it is quite unknown or unpopular even for veteran dog breeders. These dogs are also considered as one of the extremely rarest dog breeds. Although it has American in its name, this dog breed can trace its origins in the African continent. These hairless dogs were used by various African tribes for various reasons. This includes chasing and killing vermin as well as for companionship. It is a full-blooded terrier, although they look completely different from other terrier types. They share the same lineage of other hairless dog breeds such as the Chinese Crested Dog, American Hairless Terriers and the Rat Terrier.

Personality

Modern-day American Crested San Terriers are one of the most ideal family pets. They are joyful and very good-humored. These dogs just adore being around their family. Playing with their owners is this breed’s passion. These hairless dogs just love to play and are packed with high levels of energy. They are docile, gentle and friendly when at home. They are especially calm and obedient. Aside from their very family-friendly traits, they are also great pets to have especially for those who suffer from allergies. These hairless dogs are one of the breeds that are considered hypoallergenic as they do not shed hair.

African tribes used these hairless terriers to chase vermin and kept them as companion pets.

Environment

American Crested Sand Terriers are great apartment dogs! They do not do well in cold climates as they do not have a coat to cover their bodies. Adequate clothing should be worn if kept in cold climate conditions. These dogs do not farewell to an extremely hot climate and will develop skin problems if exposed to the sun for a long time.

Grooming

The American Crested Sand Terriers are hairless dogs. They do not shed hair.

Training

These are highly energetic and highly intelligent dogs. The American Crested Sand Terriers can easily be trained for obedience and proper socialization if trained at an early age.

Health

Major health issues are uncommon for this rare hairless dog breed. They do have a tendency to get various skin problems from sunburn to skin cancer if exposed to the sun for a prolonged period. These dogs are also prone to colds if not adequately dressed in cold climates.

Exercise

Like all small to medium-sized terriers, the American Crested Sand Terrier is excellent jogging or running mates. These hypoallergenic dogs should be taken for long walks every day.
