Introduction

Tiniest of the three variants, the Toy Eskimo Dog is just a small bundle of fun and obedience. This Tiny Spitz is always eager to please and can brighten up your day with their affection. The Toy Eskimo Dog is the tiniest among the three Eskies, a nick to call this Nordic dog breed. Standing between 9 to 12 inches and weighing 10 pounds max. But their tiny frames doesn’t make them any lesser than the Standard and Miniature varieties. Sometimes they are even more tenacious!

Looking like a shrunk up Samoyed dog breed, theses toy dogs all have the trademark Eskie beauty, with a head that is wedge-shaped holding their skull and muzzles perfectly proportionate. The Toy American Eskimo dog also trots like his big standard sibling, full of energy and feeling bold with every step of their tiny paws.

History

The American Eskimo Dog breed started out when German settlers brought their white German Spitz in the shores of the United States of America during World War 1. To avoid the society’s resentment towards anything German, during those times anti-German feelings were strong, the settlers decided to name them White Spitz.

So where did the Eskimo come from? The American Eskimo Dog in fact has no link to the Eskimos of Alaska or their culture. The breed got their official name during their first-ever registration application as a breed. The first one to register them was a husband and wife team with a kennel named “American Eskimo”. The name stuck, probably because it fits their personality perfectly.

The Eskies are a combination of their other Nordic dog cousins, from the original German Spitz to the white Keeshond, the white Italian Spitz, the Samoyed and the white Pomeranian. They were originally bred as farm dogs, herding livestock. Today the toy American Eskimo dog are perfect home pets and sidekicks, that is willing to protect their and entertain.

Personality

Toy American Eskimo dogs are the tinier versions of their kins the Mini and Standard sized Esksies. Like the bigger eskies, they are gifted with an impressively high level of confidence. These proud toy dogs may have short legs, but they are nimble and gifted with impressive agility. They are dogs that suffer the big dog in a small body mentality. These toy Eskimo dogs will think, behave and react like big dogs. Having these dogs as pets should be easy if you know how to establish leadership among the pack. Once these tiny Eskies sense weakness with their owners, they will act dominant and will be overly aggressive. When this happens, these toy dogs are hard to handle. They will also be very vocal about their dominance. So it is very important to have these toy dogs know their position in the pack! But overall, they are very loyal pets who will protect their family to the end!

Developed to be an all-around farm dog. Today the American Eskimo dog is considered one of the best choices for guard dogs.

Environment

Can live and be happy in an apartment type environment but be sure to give them sufficient exercise. Require a good amount of exercise sessions to prevent obesity. Also, keep an eye on them during warm days: Some owners shave their American Eskimo Dogs during the summer, but this could also make them prone to sunburn.

Grooming

Toy American Eskimo dogs are also heavy shedders. Grooming is a must to maintain its impressive Nordic coating.

Training

Because of the dog’s high intelligence and its willingness to please, it is easy to train and often ranks among the top scorers in obedience trials

Health

Toy American Eskimo dogs suffer the same health problems as the Standard and Miniature Eskimo dogs. Health issues from hip dysplasia, eye problems, skin allergies and weight problems are to be expected but it can also be prevented. Obesity is the most common problem for toy dogs. Having their diet supervised is a must!

Exercise

Toy American Eskimo dogs can develop unwanted behavior if their mental and physical conditions are not maintained properly. This can be done by taking them on daily walks. As toy dogs, they should have a space that is safely enclosed. This would prevent accidents as Toy Eskies just loves to run!
