Introduction

They are considered to be pure terriers, less the hair! The American Hairless Terrier is a small dog breed jam-packed with enough liveliness, being feisty and fearless to fill a giant dog. The AHT is perfect for individuals who cannot tolerate even those breeds that are known to be hypoallergenic dogs. In build, the American Hairless Terrier may look similar to the Rat Terrier, this is because the breed is their direct progenitor. For such a small dog, they are well-muscled, showing strong shoulders, a solid neck and very powerful legs!

History

The American Hairless Terrier has a very interesting beginning. During the early 1970s, Willie and Edwin Scott of Louisiana, USA had a Rat Terrier who gave birth to a litter of medium-sized Rat Terriers. Among the litters of their dog was a complete hairless female. That dog became the first-ever AHT and her hairless puppies were selected as the base for a foundation breeding program to produce a stable and consistent hairless dog, which is now the American Hairless Terrier. The breeding program was supervised by geneticists and veterinarians, creating a dog that is just not a freak anomaly. Up to the present, the development of the America Hairless Terrier is still ongoing, creating a dog with Rat Terrier temperament, just less the hair.

Personality

Loving dogs, playful, intelligent and alert are the most common traits of the American Hairless Terrier. They are known to be very lively, inquisitive and affectionate, making them one of the most excellent choices for those looking for companion dogs. They are great around children, provided that they are raised with them from puppy-hood.

Bred For

Direct descendants of the Rat Terriers. They are bred today for their hairless appearance and as an option for people suffering from allergic reactions to canines’ fur.

Environment

The AHT will do OK in an apartment provided that they get at brief exercise sessions every day. They should wear a sweater in cold weather

Grooming

Grooming needs are a bit different from the rest of the canine world. For being hairless, all they need are sunburn protection and keeping warm during cold weather. Bathing is needed at least once a week. Their hairless skin often becomes dry; lotion without Lanolin can be used on their bodies. Obviously, they do not shed.

Training

The American Hairless Terrier is a breed that can be trained easily.

Health

Breeding complications associated with hairless breeds are not seen with the American Hairless Terrier. Their primary concerns are skin problems such as rashes and sunburn. They can also get pimples!

Exercise

The American Hairless Terrier requires challenging games and outdoor activities. These dogs need to be taken on a long daily walk.
