A working, nurturing and very versatile dog breed, The American Indian Dog is one of the ancient breeds still existing today. They should not be confused with the Native American Dog or NAID, and should be treated as a separate breed.

History

The American Indian Dog’s history is a topic of debate. Some claim that the original native dogs are already extinct and what we see today are just re-creation of the lost breed. Extinct or recreation, you can trace the American Indian Dog’s roots as far back as 30,000 years ago in North and South America. Indians of America’s Great Plains domesticated various Native American dogs which they used for hunting, tracking, guarding and herding. They act as a pack, and would hunt that way. They are known to have versatile working abilities and naturally balanced as a dog.

Personality

American Indian Dog is considered a thinking dog breed. Their instincts are high and are very territorial. Most form intense bonding and loyalty towards the family. There are no accounts of them being aggressive, but the AI dogs are constantly alert and will act wary towards strangers.

They are pack hunters used by the Native American tribes of the Great Plains

Environment

Prefers plenty of space, but can adjust to any lifestyle with proper socializing, exercise and training.

These dogs keep themselves clean with minimal doggy odor. Hypoallergenic coat.

The American Indian Dog is prone to get overweight. Otherwise, there are no recorded health problems for these dogs and are considered to be a well-balanced dog breed.
