Introduction

A mastiff that does not drool! That is the American Mastiff! Their development started in Ohio, where a need to produce an average-sized Mastiff which is perfect for indoors, meaning a mastiff with a tighter lower lip line which does not drool!

History

The American Mastiff was first developed by Fredericka Wagner in her hometown Piketon, Ohio. Ms. Wagner owns the Flying W Farms where she started crossing the English Mastiff with the Anatolian Mastiff. The resulting puppies had a firmer, tighter lower lip line and did not drool as much as the average Mastiff; selective breeding thereafter kept the drier mouth.

Personality

The American Mastiff may look intimidating and somewhat as a bully, but they are dogs that genuinely loyal to their family. They are not aggressive towards friends, families and especially children. These dogs will only show aggression when members of their family, especially the younger ones are in a vulnerable situation. This is when American Mastiffs show their protective nature, showing bravery and courage in all types of situations.

Created to produce a mastiff that does not drool as much as the regular mastiff.

American Mastiffs do just fine in an apartment with daily exercise

Grooming

The smooth, short-haired coat is easy to groom. Brush with a firm bristle brush and wipe over with a piece of toweling or chamois for a gleaming finish. Bathe or dry shampoo when necessary. This breed sheds fur in average amounts.

Health

American Mastiffs are relatively a young breed so medical-related risks are not that well documented. But at his phase of this breed’s development, American Mastiff shows resiliency to common diseases that affect other large dog breeds. So for now, it is safe to say that these large dogs are generally healthy.

Exercise

American Mastiffs are giant powerful dogs that tend to be inactive when treated as a family pet. If this is the case, owners should make sure that they stay fit and healthy, both mentally and physically. This can be done through daily socialization and taking them on regular walks every day.
