Introduction

The Anatolian Shepherd dog is a giant of a dog breed and serves as Turkey’s all-purpose utility dog. It has been used for several thousands of years as livestock guardians, large enough to protect the herd as well as their human masters from marauding predators and of course, prized herding dogs of the Anatolian people.

History

They are considered to be descendants from mastiffs and sighthounds and are one of the known ancient breeds of dogs still in existence today. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog are members of the flocking and herding breeds which include German Shepherds, the different varieties of Belgian Shepherds, Australian Shepherds and Shetland Sheepdogs among others. They were originally developed in Turkey and some parts of Asia Minor to guard livestock against large predators, which is what most Anatolian Shepherd Dogs, are still doing today. They are also getting popular as companion pets. They come in three different sizes, small which stands 12 to 17 inches or 30 to 43 cm weighing 11 to 24 pounds or 22 to 40 pounds, medium which stands 16 to 21 inches or 40 to 53 cm, and the largest size which stands 20 to 25 inches or 50 to 63 cm, weighing 46 to 73 pounds or 20 to 33 kg.

Personality

Due to the Anatolian Shepherd Dog’s original purposes, they are known to be highly protective and very territorial. This Turkish mastiff is quite reserved to strangers but will show great affection when it comes to friends and families. They are naturally intelligent, independent, alert and considerably watchful but very calm.

Bred For

These large breeds of Turkish origin were used to guard livestock against large marauding predators. They were also bred to herd livestock.

Environment

For their sheer size, Anatolian Shepherds are not recommended for apartment life. Their guardian instincts can get the best of this breed and get aggressive to strangers, it is best to have a home with a secured and fenced yard.

Grooming

They require little grooming and known to be big shedders. Fortunately, the Anatolian shepherd dogs are seasonal shedders, shedding only twice a year.

Training

The dog requires extensive socialization as early as possible. For those who will want to make them home pets, this breed of dogs should have obedience training.

Health

Generally healthy for such a big breed, the Anatolian Shepherd suffers the common hip dysplasia prone to affect big and giant dogs. They are sensitive to anesthesia.

Exercise

They are a giant dog breed that requires a lot of exercises. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog will thrive if they live in an average-sized yard that is fenced. Long daily walks with their owners are a must!
