Introduction

Spaniard in origin, The Andalusian Podenco or commonly known as the Andalusia Hound has two distinct classifications, each with three variants. They are classified by size and by type of coat.

By size, there are the Large Andalusian Hounds weighing 45 to 73 pounds or 20 to 33 kg and standing 20 to 25 inches or 50 to 63 cm, the Medium Andalusian Hound which weighs 22 to 40 pounds or 10 to 18 kg, and the Small Andalusian Hound which stands 12 – 17 inches or 30 to 43 cm.

By type of coat, there are the Wirehaired Andalusian Hound, the Longhaired Andalusian Hound and the Smooth Andalusian Hound

History

The Andalusian Podenco can trace its origin in Spain and is considered to be among the Mediterranean sighthounds which directly descended from the ancient Egyptian dogs. Early records of these dogs are seen in cave paintings all across the Iberian Peninsula.

Personality

Originally used to pursue and hunt small games in the Andalusian Province of Spain, the Andalusian Podenco are serious hunters. They are intelligent and devoted dogs with a high sense of scent, sight and hearing. These excellent hunters can hear very low voices and armed with an athletic body and a pair of long legs which makes them fast runners and silent hunters.

Environment

This is not an apartment type of dog even with their small versions. They need spacious areas to thrive.

Grooming

Minimal grooming is required for the smooth-haired Andalusian.

Training

Best training for these breeds are its puppy-hood stage or as soon as they get home. Socialization and obedience training is important to keep them physically and mentally fit.

Health

There are no known health problems for this breed.

Exercise

This breed needs to be taken on a daily walk. In addition, they will also enjoy a good run in a safe, open field each day.
