Introduction

Anglo-French and French Hounds are hunting dogs that are also called Anglo-Francais and Francais hounds that were cross-bred and developed from French and English hound breeds.

There are seven dog breeds that are described as Anglo-Français and Français hounds:

History

Dog breeds belonging to the Anglo-Francais dog family were all developed in France. They are dogs that were crossed from various lines of English and French hounds.

The Français Tricolore or French Tricolored Hound is the classic and stereotypical hound dog that was created to hunt with and follow huntsmen on horseback. These dogs are very similar to the Poitevin breed.

The Français Blanc et Noir or French Black and White Hound is considered to be the original and prototype version of all Anglo-Francais and Francais breeds. They were bred sometime during the 19th century by crossing the Gascon-saintongeois with the Poitevin dog breed.

The Français Blanc et Orange or French White and Orange are the hounds with all white coats and orange markings. They are the result of crossing various lines of both English and French hound dogs that has orange markings in their lines.

The Grand Anglo-Français Blanc et Noir or Large Anglo-French White and Black Hound is a breed that was developed during the 19th century and was bred from the Bâtard Anglo-Saintongeois dog breed. This is a cross between the Saintongeois and the Foxhounds that was common to England.

The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore or Large Anglo-French Tricolored Hound is the French hound breed that has more foxhound blood in their lineage.

The Grand Anglo-Français Blanc et Orange or Large Anglo-Francais White and Orange is a breed that resulted in the cross between a French Billy and the English Foxhound.

The Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie is the smallest of all the Anglo-Francais and Francais hounds. These are medium-sized hound dogs that were created by crossing Poitvin dogs and Harriers. This particular breed also has Porcelaine lines, Petite Gascon-Saintongeois blood and some lines of the Petite Bleu de Gascogne. They are called Petite for their skills in hunting small game such as rabbits and hares.

Personality

All the Anglo-Francais and Francais dog breeds are gifted with all the positive traits of their English and French hound dog ancestors. These are impressive scent trackers with highly developed noses built to track and trail game. These are dogs famous for their resonant barks, dignified stance and sturdy physique. The Anglo-Francais and Francais dogs are vigorous, quick, courageous, strong, tenacious and very hardy hunting dogs and companions.

Bred For

The Anglo-Francais and Francais hounds developed to hunt in packs and created to be specialized scent trackers and trailers.

Environment

All the varieties of Grand Anglo-Francais and Francais hounds are not recommended for apartment living. The Anglo-Francais de Petite Venerie dog variety can be good apartment pets and known to adapt to any type of living conditions.

Grooming

The Anglo-Francais and Francais dogs are famous for being low-maintenance dogs when it comes to their grooming needs. They are dogs that shed hair in moderate amounts. The Anglo-Francais de Petite Venerie is considered to be the cleanest dog breed among all other breeds included in this group.

Training

All of the Anglo-Francais and Francais hound dogs can be fully trained. Like all scent hound breeds, they can lose focus as their drive to follow any scent will be very strong. To have these dogs fully trained, a firm, consistent and positive training method should be used.

Health
