History

All of the Anglo-Francais dog varieties originate from France where breeders developed these hound dogs by crossing various lines of both English and French hound dogs.

The Grand Anglo-Francais and all its variants are the largest of these hounds. They are the result of cross-breeding the larger French hounds with the Foxhounds of Britain. They are Big Boned dogs that have relatively shorter ears compared to the other Anglo-Francais dog types.

The Anglo-Francais de Moyenne Venerie and all its variants are the medium-sized included in the Anglo-Francais dog family. They are the result of cross-breeding medium-sized French Hounds. Purebred hounds such as Porcelaine dogs and the Poitevin were crossed to create this particular dog breed. They are similar in appearance to the much larger Grand Anglo-Francais types.

The Anglo-Francais de Petite Venerie and all its variants are the smallest among the Anglo-Francais dog group. French breeders used smaller French hounds to cross it with the Beagle. The most commonly used purebred to develop this breed is the Chien D’Artois dog breed.

All the Anglo-Francais dog varieties are excellent trackers and team players as they are natural pack hunters.

Personality

The Anglo-Francais dog breed inherited all the positive traits from their English and French hound ancestors. From their French ancestry, the Anglo-Francais dogs inherited an impressive and very scent tracking ability with their highly developed noses. They also got their resonant barks from this part of its ancestry. From their English ancestors, these dogs inherited the dignified built and stance as well as their study bone structure. They also gained the famous English hound vigor. All in all these dogs are scent hounds that are quick, full of courage, tenacious, strong and hardy hunting dogs.

The Anglo-Francais dogs are hounds developed to hunt in parks.

Environment

The Grand Anglo-Francais and Anglo-Francais de Moyenne Venerie dog varieties are not suitable for living in small spaces such as an apartment building or condominium complex. These dogs require wide-open spaces to move about. The Anglo-Francais de Petite Venerie dog variety can live in apartments and has been found very adapted to life in this type of living condition.

Grooming

The Anglo-Francais dogs are naturally low-maintenance dogs when it comes to grooming needs. They are dogs that shed hair in moderate amounts. The Petite variety is considered to be the cleanest among this French and English hound group. The ears on these dogs should be attended and regularly checked for infections.

Training

All of the Anglo-Francais dog varieties can be fully trained. In order to achieve a well trained Anglo-Francais dog, firm and consistent training should be done. Like all scent hounds, they will be stubborn at times during training, losing their focus once a scent is caught.

Health

Presently, all the varieties of the Anglo-Francais show no consistent and alarming medical issues. They are considered to be a hound breed that is generally healthy.

Exercise

These scent hound dogs are required to have daily play and exercise sessions to keep them well balanced.
