Introduction

A square-built dog that is powerful as it is large; the Appenzeller Mountain Dog is Switzerland’s ancient giant. They are considered to be among the really ancient purebreds existing today and originally used to herd or flock dogs. Today, these tall and dominant Swiss mastiffs serve various purposes from police work, property guardians and considered good watchdogs for families.

History

Considered as one of four Swiss dogs of origin which are descendants of Swizz native dogs crossed with mastiffs which were brought by the ancient Roman Legion, The Appenzeller Mountain Dog is Switzerland’s guardian dog giant. They were initially developed as cattle herders as well as guardian dogs for livestock and home properties.

Since the late 19th century, the Swiss breeders of this dog dutifully worked to have this ancient dog breed preserved.

Personality

The Appenzeller is a dog that airs confidence. They are known to be affectionate giants, who enjoy playful activities with families while on break from working duties. These Swiss mastiffs tend to be wary with strangers, but this will not lead to aggression as they are naturally cheerful and very obedient.

Guarding livestock and properties on rough mountain terrain

Environment

For their sheer size, The Appenzeller Mountain Dog breeds require large spaces for activities to thrive. They are not suitable for cramp apartment living conditions. Home with an average-sized yard will do to these energetic giant dogs

Minimal grooming is required as this dog breed’s coat is quite short and manageable. They are average shedders

Health

Among the giant mastiff breeds, the Appenzeller dogs are more prone to have ectropion and hips dysplasia.
