Ariege Pointing Dogs or the Ariege Pointer is a French gun dog that is used as a pointer. In France, they are called the Braque de l’Ariège. History

The Ariege Pointer is believed to be a very old dog breed that originated in The Pyrenees region known as the Ariege. Dog historians believe that the Ariege pointing dog breed is the modern version of the dogs that resulted when Bracco Italiano dogs were bred with the Perdigueiro de Burgos breed. This Braque-type dog breed was originally developed to hunt wild hares and also used as bird dogs that hunt partridges. Later on, these pointing dogs were known to be very versatile and can be used and found effective for all kinds of hunting.

Personality

Ariege Pointers are skilled and versatile hunting dogs that will be effective in all kinds of hunting from scent tracking, pointing, and retrieving and also as bird dogs. They are very energetic dogs that are equipped with impressive scenting skills. These are quick dogs that are very independent.

Bred For

The Ariege Pointing Dog was bred to be the ultimate all-purpose gun dog that can point, track scent, retrieves and uses bird dogs. Today they are also bred for agility trials, search and rescue operations and even for narcotics detection.

Environment

The Ariege Pointing Dog will not be a good city pet. They are also not suitable as apartment pets. They will thrive in rural areas with a family that can give them a regular hunting job.

Grooming

Ariege Pointers have short coats that are very easy to groom and requires a little amount of time to maintain.

Training

The Ariege Pointing dog is considered to be very trainable, but bear in mind that they are scent hounds and may lose focus once a scent is caught. These dogs should be trained in a firm and consistent method.
