Introduction

Regarded highly by the French for their endurance, Ariegeois (pronounced Ar-ERZH-wa) are believed to have superior stamina, especially when compared to other hounds of its size. They are considered one of the rare breeds in existence today and most of its current population can be seen in France.

History

The French developed Ariegeois is a European scent hound created to hunt rabbit, hare and foxes in the French regions of Ariege, hence their name. The pioneer breeders of this hound crossed Gran blue de Gascogne, Grand Gascon-Saintongeois and local Ariege hounds to produce a medium-sized but very muscular dog.

Personality

The Ariegeois is by nature a very hard-working scent hound that is even-tempered and well balanced. These French small game hunters are generally friendly and get along very well with most people as well as other dogs.

Bred For

Developed as a strong medium-sized scent hound perfect for game animals like rabbits, hares and foxes.

Environment

This breed is not particularly suitable for apartment living conditions but some dogs of this adapt to it. The Ariegeois dogs do best in rural and suburban home types of living conditions where there is an ample space for them to run and roam.

Grooming

This is one of the dogs in the scent hound family which requires little grooming.

Training

The dog breed was developed to be a well-balanced dog, very obedient and rarely aggressive making them suitable for being hunting companions. Training will not be that difficult.

Health

Unlike most of the scent hounds, the Ariegeois is a dog breed that has no known health concerns.

Exercise

Ariegeois requires special needs when it comes to exercise. They are naturally energetic and always on the move. Owners should devote ample time every day to have these dog requirements sufficiently met.
