The medium-sized herding dog breed Armant is more popularly known as the Egyptian Sheepdog. They were not originally bred as sheep herders, but as guard dogs!

History

The Armant dog breed originates in Egypt sometime during the French Campaign in Egypt and Syria during the Napoleonic Wars. These dogs are the direct descendants of crosses between the European dogs that Napoleon’s army brought to Egypt and the Briard dog breed. Armants were originally bred as guard dogs and not sheepherders. The breed got its name after the Egyptian town of Armant. This is a dog breed prized for their fearlessness when going against predators that intrude in their territory and sheep stock.

Personality

Armant dogs are known for their obedience and loyalty. They are natural guard dogs that will be very protective of its territory, livestock and family. When confronted by intruders or predators, these dogs will be fearless defenders. They are dogs known to get along and also bond with animals and children.

Bred For

The Armant was originally bred to be guard dogs but has evolved as impressive livestock herders and watchdogs of property and people.

Environment

Armant dogs are suited to live in rural or suburban areas. They are natural working dogs and are not recommended to keep as city or apartment pets.

Grooming

The Armant dog breed requires special grooming attention. It is recommended to have their shaggy long coat attended to every day. They are also dogs that should be bathed regularly.

Training

Armants are working dogs that will be highly trainable for their high intelligence and eager to please their masters. These dogs will quickly adapt to any lesson especially if they are trained with a firm and positive method.

Health

The Egyptian Sheepdog, another name to call the Armant breed is known to be at high risk of developing hip dysplasia. They are also known to be afflicted with osteochondritis dissecans.

Exercise

The Armant are natural and very hardworking working dogs! They will require plenty of physical activity to remain mentally and physically fit. Taking these dogs out for long walks, jogging, biking as well as hiking is recommended. The Armant dog is a great companion dog during walking, jogging, hiking, bicycling and playing and that is the kind of exercise it needs to utilize its high energy levels.
