History

The Artois Hound is a very rare breed and considered to be at the verge of extinction. They are scent hounds that originate in France during the 18th century. Dog experts believe that they are descendants of the ancient Bloodhound. During the reign of French monarchs Henry IV and Louis XIII, the Chien d’Artois became very popular as hunting dogs for the royalty and nobility. During the 20th century, Artois hound dogs saw a steep decline in their numbers and a breeding program to save and revive the breed started in the 1970s.
