In 2004, Bluey, a purebred Australian Cattle dog held the record as the world’s longest-lived domesticated canines. This dog was herded cattle and sheep in the Australian Outback for almost two decades before passing away at the age of 29 years and fine months. That’s how enduring these dogs are!

They are a courageous, tireless, robust, compact working dog that is agile, powerful and high in stamina which can herd cattle dogs for long distances.

History

During the 1800s, the Australian Cattle Dog was specifically created by European immigrants, which later became Australian Cattle ranchers, to answer the need of a dog that can effectively drove cattle. The dogs that the settlers brought with them were not equipped with the high endurance needed for long-distance cattle herding as well as the inhospitable hot climate of the Australian continent.

The breed is a direct descendant of the Hall’s Heeler dog, a dog developed by crossing the smooth-haired Scottish Collie with the aboriginal’s Dingo. During the middle 1800s, further development of this cross was done; The Hall’s heeler was further crossed with the Australian Kelpie and the Dalmatian, creating an excellent herding dog who can also act as a guard dog that is equipped with superior stamina and resiliency to hot and arid weather conditions. This crossed created the modern Australian Cattle Dog that we now know today.

Personality

The Australian Heeler, as it is commonly called Down Under is very loyal and naturally protective. They are always wary of strangers, but for people and family familiar with them, this Australian herding dog will be friendly and easy-going. The dog breed’s loyalty traits are unmatched on the Australian continent, they are known to be a stick-to-one type of dog, treating and being loyal only to one master. The crosses between several dog breeds made the Australian Cattle Dog very alert, serious and watchful. They are also highly intelligent, highly energetic and drive to work is high as well.

Bred For

Cattle herding in rough and inhospitable climate for long periods of time.

Environment

They will not thrive in city living conditions and apartment type homes. Rural and suburban home conditions are ideal.

Grooming

Their all weather-resistant and short-haired coating need minimal grooming.

Training

Obedience training should be done early as well as socialization sessions to avoid unwanted behaviors.

Health

Possible health issues that may arrive with the Australian Cattle dogs are the hip dysplasia PRA. They merle-colored dogs of this breed are somewhat more prone to deafness compared to the other colored Australian Cattle dogs.

Exercise

Among the special needs of this breed is in the activity department. Australian Cattle Dogs need lots of exercise and prefer to have a job to do to satisfy them. If their exercise needs are not provided, this breed of dog will become bored and would be destructive. Long daily walks and regular jogging sessions will them will be sufficient.
