History

The Australian Kelpie can trace its origin during the 1870s, descending from the bloodlines of British and Scottish Collies. Most believe that this breed is also descendants of the European collies that were crossed with the native Australian Dingoes and various other breeds. They were specifically created to herd sheep in the great Outback, with most Australians saying that the breed played a large role in the development of the sheep and wool industry of their continent.

Personality

The Kelpie is highly intelligent; a dog that is so smart it makes distinct differentiation between their work and having a rest. When working, the Australian Kelpie is active and very intense hard workers, when at home this breed is easygoing and very mild. Although they are very friendly, these dogs rarely show their affection as they share the same loyalty traits of the Australian Cattle Dogs for being a one-person type of dog. Being the master or owner of an Australian Kelpie, you’ll get a truly hardworking and constantly devoted pet and companion by your side.

Environment

The Australian Kelpie is not recommended for apartment life. They are first and foremost working dogs, a breed that needs lots of spacious areas to run in order for them to thrive.

Grooming

The Kelpie is an average shedder and grooming requirements are very easy. Bathing should only be done when necessary as the regular coating will remove the natural oils which make their fur resistant to the Australian weather conditions.

Training

Training should be done with a firm, consistent and dominant hand. A sense of authority over them should be established as they will exhibit high dominance if their handlers are meek. But otherwise, they are very easy to train and very keen on when putting on a task.

Health

The Australian Kelpie a breed knows to be very prone to PRA or Progressive Retinal Atrophy. This is a retinal degeneration disease which is the cause for most of these dogs to go partially or totally blind.

Exercise

They demand a great deal of exercise! Australian Kelpies are working dogs in nature and their energy levels are quite high. So high that the Kelpie’s are known to be workaholics and will work and run until they can’t anymore. So it is imperative to take them on long daily walks, and having a regular job for this type of dog to do is highly recommended.
