Introduction

To adopt an Azawakh Hound (pronounced OZ-a-wahk), is to adopt a rare breed know for its beauty and elegance. They are sighthounds that give off an air of great refinement. Refine they are, but those long legs are very useful. They are exceptionally fast with it, racing up to 37 miles per hour or 60 kilometers per hour.

History

The Azawakh is from the arid regions of the Sahara and Sub-Saharan Sahel. It is used as a guardian, hunter, and companion by the Tuareg people, who are known to be descendants of the Berber tribe. The tribe bred the dog for purity and beauty. Unfortunately, it has become a bit rare even in its homeland.

The dog breed’s origin can be traced to the Sahel region of the African continent. Believed to have been bred by nomadic Southern Sahara for hunting and guarding, they are also known to be great companions for the various tribes. They are and still known as great hunters with a sense of being exquisitely regal because of their long legs. Like their tribal breeders, Azawakh are pack dogs, quickly joining and forming a pack to chase away or kill intruders including Hyenas.

Personality

The Azawakh is gentle, affectionate, and playful with its family but wary, even aggressive, with strangers. It is intelligent and protective, making it a very good watchdog.

Environment

The Azawakh can adapt very well in apartment type living conditions, only if it gets enough exercise. A home with a small yard for them to roam and run around will make them happy. The Azawakhs dog breed can be sensitive to the cold climates, be sure to have a coat for them to wear while outside.

Grooming

The Azawakh’s smooth, short-haired coat is very easy to groom. This tall and leggy dog breed is an average shedder.

Training

Training should be done with a firm and confident hands, but make sure to be gentle. They are not that hard to train.

Health

These dogs are known to have various health issues throughout their lifetime. These are cardiac problems, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, seizures, spondylosis.

Exercise

The Azawakh dogs that are for home pets demand regular exercise. Long daily walks are recommended.
