History

The Basset Hound was developed in France during the sixteenth century. They were initially developed from a dwarf version of the Saint Hubert hound. It was developed to hunt small game with the hunter on foot. The breed was mostly kept by nobility but rose among the commoners after the French Revolution. Today, the Basset Hound, continues to serve as a hunting dog but they are quickly being popular as companion pets.

Personality

The short and stumpy Basset Hound is friendly, mild and easygoing dog. It gets along with almost everyone including other dogs. This breed has a strong hunting instinct and will roam around if they are not supervised. For a hound, a group of dogs who are known to bark often, they are considered very vocal.

Bred For

Developed for their enhanced nose, French nobility bred them to hunt small games while their human masters are on foot.

Environment

The Basset Hound is quite adaptable to living environments. These dogs can live in city, rural and suburban living conditions.

Grooming

Regular grooming should be done with special care for their eyes and ears.

Training

Most scent hounds are easy to train for their high intelligence, but they are easily distracted by a various array of scents surrounding them.

Health

Basset Hounds are known to get bloated when their diet are not supervised. Asides from obesity, they are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, glaucoma, thrombopathia, thyroid problems and the von Willerbrand’s disease.

Exercise

The Basset Hound’s is prone to bloat so a good exercise regiment should be done to avoid gaining a lot of weight. Long daily walks should be done at least every other day.
