Introduction

The Bedouin Shepherd Dog has two types, the Large and the Small variety. Large Bedouin Shepherds are used as camp guard dogs. Small Bedouin Shepherds are used as herding dogs. The two types have different skills and physical attributes but share the same temperament.

History

The Bedouin Shepherd Dog is considered to be one of the oldest dog breeds known today even if most internationally canine organizations do not recognize them as purebred. The Bedouin Shepherd dog breed originated in Africa and in regions surrounding the Saharan desert. They were kept as herding dogs by the nomadic Bedouin tribe. These nomads developed the particular dog breed to be resilient and able to adapt to the harsh climate of the Sahara.

Personality

The Bedouin Shepherd Dog was developed to be an all-purpose and multi-utility companion of the nomadic Bedouins of Sahara. The two types of this breed were bred for specific functions. Large varieties are hunters, guardians and watchdogs that keep predator from intruding into the nomads camping ground. Smaller varieties are the ones trained to be herding dogs that are known to be impressive flock guardians and cattle drovers. They are naturally alert. These are dogs that will bark loudly in excessive amounts. They are not known to be social. They are primarily tireless working dogs that can adapt to extreme weather conditions may it be extremely hot or extremely cold climates.

Bred For

The Bedouin Shepherd dog breed was bred by nomadic Sahara tribes to be a multi-purpose working dog. Large varieties are hunting dogs and guard dogs against camp intruders. Smaller varieties are trained and built for herding and flocking guardian work.

Environment

The Bedouin Shepherds are not apartment pets. These dogs should not be kept as family pets in the city. They should not be kept as family dogs at all. They are hunting and guard dogs built for the outdoors and constant mobility when it comes to living areas.

Grooming

The Bedouin Shepherds are dogs that require minimal grooming attention. They are dogs that shed hair in little or none at all.

Training

The Bedouin Shepherd Dog are known for their intelligence but also known to be one of the most difficult to train in the world today. Their skills in herding and guarding are natural instincts.

Health

The Bedouin Shepherds have no known genetic disorders and is free of common canine diseases.

Exercise

The Bedouin Shepherds are working dogs. They are bred and kept in an environment that requires them to be tireless workers. They are dogs that demand extremely high activity needs. These activities should be mentally and physically challenging to satisfy their energy requirements.
