Introduction

Named after the village of Groenendael in Belgium, the Belgian Shepherd Groenendael differs from his other three siblings by having a long, straight, medium-length and heavy outer coat. Besides their distinctive coats, the Belgian Groenendael’s size and weight are similar to the Belgian Laekenois, Belgian Malinois and Belgian Tervuren.

History

One of four varieties of dogs that are considered under the Belgian Shepherd breed, Belgian Groenendael varieties are considered a separate dog breed in the United States. The rest of the world considers the Groenendael, Laekenois, Malinois and Tervuren as one.

The Belgian Shepherd, in general, were initially bred and developed in Belgium during the late nineteenth century. Their original purpose was to create an efficient livestock guardian and very commanding herders. Their natural instinct to protect and guard gave way for this breed to be utilized by police enforcement units and the military.

In the year 1891, breeders and experts formed a panel to resolve the issue of the Belgian Shepherd’s four different variants. A particular standard was met, where they determined that all four varieties are similar in size and shape but differ only in their coats, with length, texture and color being the three main distinctions. Following these distinctions, all four varieties were given names from the villages or regions they were first developed.

Personality

These are intelligent and highly trainable dogs that are driven with a strong instinct to work and perform. They are affectionate as well, showing love to their families but will reserve their emotions around strangers. They are naturally protective and territorial. These Belgian Shepherds are also highly energetic even for their large size. The breed is known to be a one-person dog but would be responsive to other handlers if trained to do so.

Environment

The Belgian Groenendael will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. These dogs will do best with homes that have an average size yard. All Belgian Shepherd varieties prefer cool climates.

Grooming

The Belgian Shepherd Groenendael has long, straight, medium length, heavy outer coating and a dense undercoat that requires daily grooming.

Training

Training for obedience and teaching them early who is in charge is a must for these shepherds.

Health

The Belgian Groenendael is very hardy and impressively healthy. Major health concerns are uncommon but they do acquire minor ailments which include skin allergies, eye problems, occasional hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia.

Exercise

These Belgian shepherds are working dogs, accustomed to an active outdoor lifestyle. They require a lot of exercises, including a long daily walk.
