Introduction

The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four varieties of the Belgian sheepdogs. The dogs are the Belgian Laekenois, Belgian Groenendael, Belgian Malinois, and the Belgian Tervuren. They differentiate themselves from the other Belgian Shepherd varieties by their rough and wiry coating.

History

The Belgian Laekenois is just one of four varieties of dogs that are under the umbrella of the Belgian Shepherd dog breed family. In America, each variety is distinguished as separate dog breeds. Outside of the USA, all varieties are considered one breed.

The Belgian Shepherd can trace its roots in late 19th century Belgium where they were bred and developed to be livestock guardians. The Belgian Laekenois is also known to be excellent herders.

1891 was the year the Belgian Shepherd varieties were differentiated. A particular standard was met, with experts and breeders agreeing that all four varieties of this breed are the same when it comes to size and shape. They also agreed that this breed’s four varieties have a distinctive coating, with each variety having different lengths, textures and colors of coat. Each variety gained their name from the areas, villages or regions in which they were first bred.

Personality

These are an intelligent and highly trainable dog that is driven to perform impressively while at work. Affectionate, loving, naturally protective and territorial are also their traits. These Belgian Shepherds are also highly energetic but obedient and respectful of his handler. They are extremely loyal, Belgian Laekenois are one-person one-master types of dog

Bred For

Herding livestock across the various regions of Belgium. Today they are considered as top choices for K9 police enforcement units.

Environment

The Belgian Laekenois will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised, but they prefer homes with at least an average size yard. Cool climates are preferred, but these dogs adapt well to others.

Grooming

Their rough, wiry coat needs to be trimmed about twice a year. Dead and excessive hair should be removed. Bathe only if it is absolutely necessary, as bathing removes the waterproofing of the coat.

Training

Housebreak and obedience training is a must for home pets to avoid destructive behavior while indoors.

Health

The entire Belgian Shepherd dog breed families are hardy and healthy. Some minor health concerns that have been reported are skin allergies, eye problems, and occasionally hip and elbow dysplasia.

Exercise

This is a working dog that is accustomed to an active outdoor life. As such it needs a lot of exercises, including a long daily walk. In addition, it will greatly benefit being off the leash as much as possible in a safe area.
