Adopt a Belgian Shepherd Tervuren, Dog Breeds Guide

Introduction

Belgian Tervuren dog breed is just one of four varieties of the Belgian Shepherds. There’s the Tervuren, the Groenendael, the Malinois and the Laekenois. They are considered to be similar in size and weight, but each Belgian shepherd has different coat. The Tervuren has a long and straight heavy outer coating that is medium in length and a dense undercoat.

History

The Belgian Shepherd Tervuren was first developed and used as all-around working dogs in the Belgian village of Tervuren, hence their name. They are highly intelligent like the other variants of this Belgian breed, are famous for being a jack of all trades when it comes to guarding and protection duties. Although not as popular as their Malinois and Groenendael kins, this particular shep is one impressive police dog, with talents on scent related jobs like bomb detection and finding contraband such as narcotics.

Personality

These are intelligent and highly trainable dogs that are driven with a strong instinct to work and perform. They are affectionate as well, showing love to their families but will reserve their emotions around strangers. They are naturally protective and territorial. These Belgian Shepherds are also highly energetic even for their large size. The breed is known to be a one-person dog but would be responsive to other handlers if trained to do so.

Bred For

They were bred for various working tasks. Such as guarding, flocking, herding, protection, search and rescue, and a plethora of police enforcement-related tasks.

Environment

The Belgian Tervuren will do okay in an apartment, as long as they are exercised regularly. Like the other Belgian Shepherd dogs, they will be happier in homes with an average-sized yard. Although they prefer colder climates, these dogs are known to adapt to almost all sorts of weather conditions.

Grooming

Their long, straight and medium-length coating, as well as the denser undercoating, requires regular and daily attention.

Training

Socialization and obedience training is the key to make the Belgian Tervuren an ideal dog to have as a pet or to adopt.

Health

Like the other variants, Tervuren shepherds are hardy, this healthy breed has no major health concerns. Some minor concerns that have been seen are skin allergies, eye problems, excessive shyness, excessive aggressiveness and occasionally hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia.

Exercise

Being outside and working hard is their true vocation. Long daily walks should be done but are not sufficient. Have them off the leash in a large open space so they can roam and stretch their muscles.
