Introduction

A sheepdog that looks more coat than a dog, Bergamasco dogs have coats that are thick and resemble the famous dreadlocks hairdo. Their thick and bundled coatings are called flocks, and it may look heavy on them, but they are the secret weapons of this dog breed! Their unusual and truly eye-catching “flocks” serves as their all-weather insulation, keeping them warm in cold temperatures, while maintaining cool temperatures on hot days.

History

Known as one of the ancient dog breeds still in existence, the Bergamasco Sheepdog is believed to be close relatives of the Maremma Sheepdogs and the Briard. The breed’s original ancestors are now precisely known, but experts speculate that they came to the European continent together with their nomadic shepherd masters or the ancient Phoenician traders.

The surest thing about these dogs’ obscure history is that they first gained popularity in the Alps, where they were developed and valued highly as excellent herders. Their performance in the rugged terrain and extreme weather conditions in the Alps were so impressive that the shepherds who bred and developed them treated this breed’s bloodline were kept secret from outsiders. During troublesome days of World War II, the breed nearly saw its extinction; fortunately Italian breeders fancied their unusual coating and ended up resurrecting the almost lost Bergamasco.

Personality

Gaining all the positive traits of both herding dogs and flocking breeds, the Bergamo Shepherd dogs, a nickname to use to call this breed are known to be very courageous, highly intelligent but also always eager to please and perform for his master. These traits just don’t make them great working canines, but also as ideal home pets. Devotion is their most likable trait, showing loyalty and affection to their friends, families which include children and other pets.

Herding livestock since ancient times.

Environment

These sheepdogs are best suited for seasonal to cold climates. They are not the type of dogs suitable for apartment living. A house with sufficient yard space to serve as a venue for exercise is recommended.

Grooming

Their unusual coat once fully flocked requires minimal care, except for occasional brushing and bathing. Flocks are term for their coats which grow with the cords. They might look heavy on the Bergamo Shepherd, but their flocks are great insulation from all types of weather conditions.

Training

Although not submissive by nature, they will be obedient when properly trained using positive reinforcements.

Health

They are very healthy as a dog breed and no major and minor ailments have been recorded to cause alarm.

Exercise

These dogs require exercise, but if they are living in homes with sufficient yard space, ideally a large farm, these “flocked” covered sheepdogs will exercise on his own. Long daily walks and playtime with the kids are required if you have them as home pets. For owners who will use them on the farm, herding livestock, preferably sheep will make them very content.
