History

The Berger des Pyrenees was developed as herding dogs in France’s Pyrenees Mountain Valley region. Canine historians believed that these dogs are they descendants of the ancient canines kept by nomadic shepherd who are indigenous to the Pyrenees area. They are traditionally worked together with the Great Pyrenees flock guardian dog, working as a team to herd, flock and protect their masters’ livestock. During World War I, this humble and amiable herding dog’s received a new calling, serving the French military as military dogs in camps and trenches. Today they are still herding livestock and steadily getting popular as an all around guard dog to have as pets.

Personality

The Berger des Pyrenees is a very active dog which is just full of nervous energy. It is always suspicious and wary of strangers. They are constantly alert and will show fearless behavior if the situation calls it. Some lines of the Berger dogs are more prone to mischief, while the smooth-faced variety tends to be less nervous.

Environment

Actual physical living space is really not the biggest concern with these dogs. Bergers will service and adapt to any living condition given to them, however small the space can be. The more important aspect when it comes to their living environment needs is the amount stimulation that they will get to sufficiently satisfy their mental and physical needs.

Grooming

This breed has two varieties when it comes to coats. There is the smooth-faced variety, which requires minimal grooming effort and considered as average shedders. Then there is the rough-faced variety, which requires more grooming efforts and time.

Training

Their high prey drive and tendency to be very vocal should be corrected with positive training sessions. They are highly intelligent and quick to learn.

Health

The breed is considered relatively healthy and disease free compared to the other herding breeds. But it is recommended to have them evaluated for hip dysplasia, eye problems, and joint as well as hearing ailments.

Exercise

Daily exercise is needed by these dogs to sufficiently satisfy their endless stamina. The key to have these lean and muscular dogs happy is keeping them active but not boring them with routine. Mixing their exercise schedules would be recommended. Have them on long walks or hike one day then go swimming the next, and so forth and so on.
