Introduction

The Berger du Languedoc is a French herding dog breed with several varieties:

Berger de Camargue – considered as extinct
Berger de la Crau – rare with only several hundred dogs in existence
Berger des Cévennes – extremely rare on the verge of extinction

The Berger du Languedoc’s nearly extinct status has forced the Fédération Cynologique Internationale to delete this breed on its registry. However, the Société Centrale Canine initiated a recognition process for the Berger de La Crau variety.

History

The Berger du Languedoc is a French herding dog that originates in Southern France’s former province of Languedoc that now covers the modern-day regions of Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées, Rhône-Alpes and Auvergne. They were originally bred to be flock guardians. French shepherds used these dogs to drive and also guard their flocks of sheep. There are several varieties of the Berger du Languedoc, each named after the region were they are used and bred as flock guardians and sheepherders. Today, this breed and all its variety are nearly extinct or on the verge of extinction. Among the breed’s variety, the Berger de la Crau is the only type that has significant numbers to be able to revitalize the breed. The Berger du Languedoc is generally smaller compared to other French sheepdog breeds, standing between 41 to 51 centimeters. Dog experts believe that this breed is the ancestor of the modern Bouvier des Flandres.

Personality

The Berger Du Languedoc is prized for their herding abilities. They are known to be hardworking dogs that are keen and tireless while performing their herding and flock guardian duties. These dogs are very energetic and often excitable. They are lovable and very kind dogs when around family, children and other animals.

French shepherds in Southern France used the Berger du Languedoc as sheepherders and flock drovers.

Environment

The Berger du Languedoc is not suitable for urban living. These are not good to have as apartment pets. They are sheepdogs that will thrive in rural areas working as herders and flock drovers.

Berger du Languedoc are dogs that will be very easy to groom. These dogs will shed hair in very little amounts or none at all.

High intelligence comes naturally to the Berger du Languedoc making them very easy to train.
