Introduction

Ancient sheepdogs that use boundary, tending, herding and any strategy that will get their livestock properly herded, Berger Picards are one of the best in the dog herding family. They love to go on patrols while eyeing their livestock as well as being alert for possible predators. This is impressive and very unique because most sheepdogs tend to use the fetching style of herding.

They are also known to be the oldest of all French shepherds, with traces of its first arrival in Picardy, the French region they were named after, and the Pas de Calais with the Celts as far back as AD 800.

History

Most sheepdog breeds are old and a great number are in the ancient breed lines. The Berger Picard is considered among the oldest breeds of sheepdogs that are both herders and guard dogs to protect livestock in the Picardie region of north-eastern France.

Their direct ancestry is not recorded, but some experts say that the Berger Picard show traits that are seen in Celtic or Asian dog breeds. Other breeders believed that they are more related to the Briard or Belgian Shepherd dogs.

After the breeds near extinction during the two great wars which ravaged France, the Berger Picard are gradually growing in numbers. But they are still considered rare both in native France and other countries.

Personality

Energetic, alert, loyal and sweet-tempered with children, it is a fine sheep and cattle herder and a good farm guard. Contact with other animals is not generally a problem but early and proper socialization of these dogs will make them perfect outdoor companions.

Environment

Will thrive in rural areas and in a farm setting environment. Can adapt to apartment type homes but lots of training and patience will be required,

Grooming

This breed is a light shedder and has no doggie odor.

Training

It is a real task to train Picards for any kind of dog-sport. Obedience training and housebreaking should be easy for these dogs for their high intelligence.

Health

Hip dysplasia is known, but not common because the dog is not super heavy.

Exercise

Lots of exercises is required for this breed, including a long daily walk. It will enjoy swimming, running beside your bike, and a nice long walk. The Berger Picard makes an excellent jogging companion. Enrolling it in an obedience class or in an agility skills class is an excellent way to keep it happy. They do not do well in competition because they find it almost impossible to perform consistently.
