History
Billy dogs were first developed in the 19th century across France’s central western region. They were developed to be large dogs that will be efficient hunting companions. It is believed that the Billy breed is the result of crosses between three dog breeds that are now considered extinct. These are the Ceris, Larye and Monetemboeuf dog breeds. Later on, breeders mixed foxhounds to Billy’s bloodlines. The breed got its name in honor of their creator Monsieur Gaston Hublot de Rivault who owned the Chateau de Billy located in Poitou, France. Rivault developed them to be pack hunters that will be efficient hunters of Roe deer and wild boards. These dogs are still being used as such in their native country. The year 1886 saw the creation and recognition of Billy dog breed’s official standards.

Personality
Billy are large dogs that will be dog-aggressive of the same sex. They are not known to be sociable towards other dog breeds as well. These are hunting hounds full of courage and very intelligent when out on the field. Billy dogs can be well-trained dogs and are known to compete in obedience trials.

Bred For
The Billy breed was bred to be large hunting dogs than hunts in large packs with other hounds.

Environment
The Billy is not recommended to have as an apartment pet. These are dogs that will not do well in the city. They are rural and suburban dwellers that require lots of open space to move about

Grooming
Billy dogs have short coats that will be easy to groom. It is advised to have them brushed occasionally or once a week. Their easy to groom coat does make the Bill dogs vulnerable in cold climates.

Training
The Billy is one of the dog breeds that will be remarkable during training. They enjoy training very much and will be extremely easy and enjoyable to train. These large hunting dogs can be very well trained and proven to be top competitors in obedience trials.

Health
There are no known alarming medical conditions that are known to commonly affect the Billy breed. Among large dogs, Billy dogs are considered to be very healthy.

Exercise
Billy dogs are big and highly active hounds that should be exercised regularly. It is ideal to give them hunting jobs or take them out on walks, jogging and running every day.
