Introduction

There were dogs bred by American presidents, European royalty, ancient civilizations…. but only one can have the distinction of being developed by the Soviet War Machine!

A dog developed by the Soviet Army to be the canine workers of the Red Army. The Black Russian Terrier is a breed that mirrors the USSR’s drive for efficiency and superiority. During the late 1930’s up the middle 1940s, Communist Russia demanded an animal that can push the war efforts. They started the “Red Star” kennel program, a Soviet Army controlled dog breeding program staffed by dog specialists and breeders aimed at one goal… produce a massive, robust, high spirited all-around dog that can do special duties competently as well as willing to work in various climate conditions and various terrains.

History

The Black Russian Terrier was developed by the Russian Military during the 1930s, the purpose of their creation was to produce a multi-purpose worker that can effectively guard, herd and strong enough to be sled dogs. To produce this breed, the Soviets crossed the Rottweiler, Giant Schnauzer and Airedale breeds.

Personality

Black Russian Terrier dogs are alert and energetic. They are also affectionate and will be gentle with family. But like most terriers, the Blackies can be very protective when a new face is around. But perhaps the most admirable thing about these Terries is a well-balanced temperament that is very stable. They also have the ability to quickly adapt to any situations and conditions.

Environment

The Black Russian Terrier will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. They are relatively inactive indoors and no matter how big your yard is they will roam and explore every square foot.

Grooming

These are dogs that shed very little, provided if their coats are regularly brushed.

Training

Typical of most terriers, the Black Russian Terrier dog enjoys training sessions just love pleasing their masters. Housebreaking them would be very easy.

Health

The breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. Russian breeders are not known to have dogs X-rayed so the problem often results in debilitating scenarios.

Exercise

Black Russian Terriers are always ready for a long daily walk. They love to romp, play and to be entertained. Most of them love snow and water. They will roll in the snow and splash in the water. Daily mental and physical exercise is important in order to release this dog’s energy. If you allow the energy to build up inside them you will run into behavior issues
