Introduction

The Bleu de Gascogne is a breed that we can call the “great contributor” in the dog world. This is because the Blue Gascogne has contributed its bloodline to at least 80 different dog breeds worldwide. From hounds to gun dogs, this breed has and continues to be among the top choice to use when developing other breeds.

History

There are four Bleu de Gascogne breeds recognized internationally: The Grand Bleu de Gascogne, the Petite Bleu de Gascogne, the Griffon Bleu de Gascogne, and the Basset de Gascogne. The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is the progenitor of the other three breeds. It is believed to be descended from the large coursing hounds of the Middle East and was developed in the southern French region of Gascony as hunters for large game. The other types developed as hunters saw a need to pursue a smaller game. The other types were developed as hunters a saw a need to pursue smaller game such as rabbits and foxes. The petite blues were smaller than the grand, while the bassets were even smaller dwarfs. The final breed, the Petite Griffon Bleu was created by crossing the Bleu with the rough-haired rounds.

During the 18th century, the first batch of the Bleus arrived in the USA as a gift from the Marquis de Lafayette to George Washington. Today, the Gascogne hounds are widely available in the United States, except for the Petite Griffon Bleu de Gascogne. These dogs are so rare that there are no records of them in the USA, and are considered few in numbers in France, their home country.

Personality

All of the Bleu de Gascogne breeds are easygoing and fun-loving dogs, they may be slightly reserved at first, but they warm up quickly. These breeds are very vocal as they are very active. The Gascogne dog family will get along with almost everyone and are 100% friendly and very outgoing. These dogs are hard workers, intense in the field, but calm and relaxed at home. They may be a bit stubborn and will wander when a new scent whiff by them. All in all, these hounds are stable and well balanced, making them perfect home pets that will have no trouble getting along with children and other dogs.

Hunting and tracking various sizes of games from small to large prey.

Environment

All of Bleu Gascogne dog breeds are not suitable for apartment living conditions. They do best with families who are living active lifestyles and in suburban and rural areas.

Grooming

Pet dogs require average grooming of once a week. If used for their original purpose, these master smellers can get quite dirty during the hunt.

Training

Being stubborn is one of their trademark traits, making training a bit difficult. Their high sense of smell and natural instinct to track fresh scents will often have them lose their focus while training. Patience and being firm is the key.

Health

Like most hounds, all of the Bleu de Gascogne dog breeds are prone to bloat, hip and elbow dysplasia. Otherwise, they are relatively healthy canines.

Exercise

Having adequate amounts and regularly scheduled exercise sessions is a must. Having an average yard that is fenced will suit these dogs very well.
