Introduction

Often described as a moping dog wearing a baggy suit, the Bloodhound is one of the most ancient purebreds still existing today. They have been bred purely by more than 1,000 years without having other lines crossed with their bloodlines. Their name was not taken by the blood scent of humans, which they excel at, but stands for “blooded hound”, or a dog that is aristocratic and noble in the lineage. They were originally used as scent hounds during small to medium game hunting all across the British Isle. Today they are tireless and specialized law enforcement workers, giving accurate trails of evidence that are honored by the court of law!

History

Bloodhounds are considered to be one of few ancient dog breeds still being bred today. The early bloodhounds were just available in two colors: black or white. The black bloodhounds are called Saint Huberts, while the white ones are called Southern Hounds.

During the twelfth century, the Bloodhound breed became popular with the clergy. These church dignitaries kept the breed pure over the next several centuries. When it reached the United States during the 19th century, these ancient hound breeds were further developed. Today there are not commonly used as hunting dogs for game animals, but rather as tracking dogs for several law enforcement units in countries like the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Personality

Bloodhounds are good-tempered and outgoing dogs. These scent hounds are very affectionate and get along with almost everyone, including young children as well as other dogs and other pet animals. Among the hounds’ dog family, this particular breed is somewhat shyer in nature and would often be sensitive to negative human emotions.

Like most scent hounds, the Bloodhounds are very vocal, they bark at everything, stubborn and prone to wander away, and these dogs can get very messy as they drool.

Environment

The Bloodhound will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They are relatively inactive indoors and do best with at least an average-sized yard.

Grooming

The smooth, short-haired coat is easy to groom. Bloodhounds have a distinctive dog-type odor. This breed is an average shedder.

Health

One of the major problems of Bloodhounds is their tendency to get bloated. These dogs have higher risks of obesity when compared to other dog breeds. Bloodhounds gain weight easily and having their diet supervised and controlled is a must to avoid major health issues brought by obesity. Bloodhounds are also prone to stomach cramps brought by overeating. Aside from their diet, health issues such as the common hip dysplasia and calluses are often seen on this scent hound breed. Eye and ear infections are also common to these dogs.

It’s in the blood of the Bloodhounds to love the outdoors. These impressive scent trackers of the canine world have high energy levels. They need to run and have plenty of time for exercise or other activities that will satisfy their energy levels. Taking them for a daily walk or stroll is highly recommended. But be sure you can keep up with them. Bloodhounds are famous for having impressive stamina!

Exercise

Bloodhounds love a good run and need a lot of exercises. They should be taken for a long daily walk. However, if it picks up an interesting scent, you may find it difficult to get its attention. They have an incredible level of stamina and can walk for hours on end.
