History
The Blue Heeler dog breed originated in Australia in the early 19th century. This was the time that European settlers needed a cattle dog that can help them on their farms and ranches. Blue Heelers were specifically developed to create an effective herding dog that is an efficient cattle driver. These dogs were also bred for higher endurance, versatility, adaptability and resiliency that are needed in long-distance cattle herding across the hot climate and various terrains of the Australian continent. They got their name from their ancestors, the Hall’s Heller Dog. The modern Blue Heeler dog breed has lineages of smooth-haired Scottish Collie dogs, the Australian Dingo, the Australian Kelpie and also Dalmatians.

Personality
The Blue Heeler dogs are very loyal and naturally protective herding dogs. They are always wary of strangers, but for people and family familiar with them, this Australian herding dog will be friendly and easy-going. The dog breed’s loyalty traits are unmatched on the Australian continent, they are known to be a stick-to-one type of dog, treating and being loyal only to one master. Blue Heeler dogs are also known to be very alert, serious and watchful. These dogs are highly intelligent, highly energetic and drive to work is high as well.

Blue Heelers were developed to be efficient cattle herding dogs to withstand the rough and inhospitable climate of the Australian outback.

Environment
Blue Heelers are dogs that will not do well in city living conditions. These dogs are not apartment pets. This dog breed will do best in rural and suburban areas.

Grooming
Blue Heelers have weather-resistant coats that require little grooming and attention.

Training
Blue Heelers are very trainable. These dogs should have obedience training and socialization as early as their puppy-hood stage.

Health
Blue Heelers are plagued health issues varying from hip dysplasia, PRA and hearing problems.

Exercise
Blue Heelers require lots of exercises and should be given jobs or regular activities. They are dogs that should be taken on long walks every day. Taking them on daily jogging sessions is ideal.
