Introduction

Blue Picardy Spaniels or known in their traditional French name, Épagneul Bleu de Picardie, are French spaniels bred along the River Somme. They are descendants of Picardy Spaniels and English Setters, and known as a very quiet dog, preferring to be active than laid back. The Blue Picardy Spaniel is similar to their cousins the Picardy Spaniel, except for their distinctive bluish coating.

History

Blue Picardy Spaniel, also known officially as Épagneul Bleu de Picardi, and fondly called Bleu Picard, are pointing dogs that were only classified as separate from the Epangeul Picard in the early twentieth century. The distinctive color was probably developed by infusing a blue Belton English Setters and possibly Gordon Setters. The breed was recognized in 1921 and is rare even in their homeland.

Personality

The Blue Picardy is the dog breed known to have an easygoing and affectionate behavior. They are highly trainable and very intelligent. The Bleu de Picardie dog breed will always show devotion to family and they perfectly get along with children as well as other dogs and animals.

Bred For

All spaniels’ breeds were originally bred to be hunting dogs, bred to flush or spring game harsh and adverse terrain and conditions. Today they are popular home pets for their convenient and manageable size.

Environment

Unlike other spaniels, the Blue Picardy is not that adaptable to apartment living conditions. These dogs do best with families who are living in rural and suburban environments.

Grooming

Regular grooming is required but is easy and does not take up much of our time.

Training

These dogs are easy to train!

Health

There is no known genetic health issues linked to the Blue Picardy Spaniels. But they are prone to ear infections though, a common thing for dogs with pendulous ears including Basset Hounds and other Spaniel breeds.

Exercise

With high levels of energy, the Blue Picard is a dog that demands constant exercise, and constant attention!
