Introduction

Famous for having that “bawling” bark, these very vocal hounds are a breed that’s determined to stay on track! Their stubbornness to let go of scents, however, intricate the tracks make them ideal pets for families who are into outdoor activities such as hunting, trekking and camping. The athletic Bluetick got its name from their coat pattern. They have this dark bluish in color and covered in a ticking or mottled pattern.

History

Origin of the Bluetick Coonhound are believed to be from the lines of English Foxhounds and big game Grand Bleu de Gascogne or commonly called the French Staghound. In the United States, Bluetick Coonhounds were referred as one and the same with the English Coonhounds for years. It was in 1945 that the US Bluetick breeders decided to break away from the English breeders, having disagreements on the trend toward producing a hot-nosed and faster hunter. US Bluetick breeders take pride on their original Bluetick that are larger, cold-nosed and resolute slower hounds compared to the English coonhound dogs.

Personality

There are two sides to every story and such is the case with the Bluetick Coonhound. This hound breed is fun-loving, hardworking and always getting along with everyone. It is always in the move, being a highly active dog breed and is always looking enthusiastic about just about anything. But their friendly nature can’t hide their natural instincts as these dogs are known to have a high prey drive and show dog-aggressive behavior. They are also dogs that are known to be very vocal, barking and “bawling” at small game animals. Being natural hunters, these hounds tend to roam.

Environment

The Bluetick is not recommended for apartment life. These are dogs which will do best with homes that have at least a large yard. Coonhounds are prone to roam and wander.

Grooming

An occasional brushing will do. In order to keep the ears clean and infection-free, regular attention is a must.

Training

Hounds are known to be stubborn and usually difficult to train for their tendency to lose focus. The primary reason for this is their highly evolved noses, once they get a scent, they rarely let it go.

Health

Bluetick Coonhounds are healthy dogs in general. But they are also prone to hip dysplasia, cataracts and Krabbe’s disease.

Exercise

Long brisk daily walks are just one of many regular exercise sessions that a Bluetick should have. These dogs will turn into high strung and destructive animals if they are not given sufficient mental and physical outlets to release all their energy.
